This holiday season, “put your money where the movement is and gift black .”
Presented by the 15 Percent Pledge, on the corner of Lafayette & Spring Street in Soho stands the Gifteen Holiday Pop-up shop. Showcasing black-owned brands (including KNC Beauty, Brother Vellies, Khiry, Danessa Myricks, and more) the refined space feels like a shoppable gallery, exhibiting a mix of high-end accessories, home decor, and art.
Even if you’ve finished holiday shopping, visit the pop-up to learn more about the #15percentpledge and ignite a conversation about accountability. Take inventory of how you can commit to diversifying power/representation and ways to give back to the causes you care about in your community.
The 15 Percent Pledge, started in 2020 by activist and Brother Vellies designer Aurora James, asks the world’s largest retailers and brands to pledge fair representation in the industry.
Since Black people make up 15% of the US population, the pledge asks businesses to dedicate 15% of their shelf space towards black-owned brands.
“The Pledge is an invitation to retailers to give their valued community what they are asking for: variety and economic equality. The Pledge allows us to learn and grow together, led by a sustainable model for long-term change.”
Two years later, over 29 of the world’s most recognized retailers (including Nordstrom, Sephora, J.crew, Victoria’s Secret) have taken the pledge, bringing over 600 black-owned brands to shelves nationwide, redirecting $10B in revenue.
Give the gift of giving black this year.
